When Is Cheer Season?

Ready? Okay! Depending on the level of competition, the cheer season can span much of the year. Exact timelines vary by state, association, and program type; however, there are general patterns across the U.S. High school, college, and All-Star cheer follow slightly different seasonal schedules.

Sideline cheer, which includes most high school and college programs, focuses on supporting school sports, promoting school spirit, and engaging crowds at games. High school cheer typically begins with tryouts from March to May, followed by summer camp and training from June to July. Football season runs from August to November, while competition season generally takes place from December through February.

College cheer follows a similar structure. Tryouts usually happen in the spring, with training and camps during the summer. Cheerleaders support football and basketball throughout the fall and winter seasons, and many teams begin preparing for national championships in January, with the competitive season often running through April.

Major Annual Cheerleading Competitions

In the cheer world, major competition is a driving force behind competitive cheer. Not only do cheer competitions highlight dance routines, but it also puts a spotlight on the athleticism of cheerleaders, as well as creating lifelong memories. Cheer competitions in the USA are typically held around the same time each year.

However, locations and exact dates can change, and it is recommended that teams confirm this information with their team leaders. Here is a list of some of the most popular cheer competitions and their importance to the cheer world.

The Majors - Held in January, this event is an elite, one-night, and invite-only showcase that only features the "best of the best' in the Senior Level 6 division.

UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship - Typically held in February, in Orlando, the UCA Championship is the largest and most recognized championship for high school teams, and it's televised on ESPN.

NCA All-Star National Championship - One of the largest and most renowned competitions, often used to earn bids to Worlds or The Summit.

The Cheerleading Worlds (also known as The Worlds) - The most prestigious event for Level 6-7 All-Star teams, featuring over 9,000 athletes from 40+ countries. This event is held in April in Orlando.

Additionally, preparation for these competitions can start as early as four months prior to and mainly sees team qualification through regional competitions.

How to Find Local Cheerleading Events and Competition Calendars

Coaches looking for local cheer competition dates should start with official organizations that publish reliable event calendars. State athletic associations are a primary source for high school cheer competitions and often list sanctioned events, qualification requirements, and championship schedules.

For all-star and recreational teams, major Varsity Spirit brands such as UCA (Universal Cheerleaders Association) and NCA (National Cheerleaders Association) publish regional and national event schedules on their websites. In addition, the USASF (U.S. All-Star Federation) maintains listings of sanctioned competitions for all-star programs. Local cheer gyms, youth leagues, and regional cheer organizations also frequently post upcoming competitions, making them valuable resources for finding nearby events and smaller regional competitions.

Most cheer competition calendars are released 6–12 months in advance, allowing teams to plan their season early. Staying updated through organization websites, email newsletters, and social media announcements helps coaches secure spots at popular events before they fill up. Early registration can also provide lower pricing and better scheduling options.

What Coaches and Teams Should Plan For

Whether you’re a cheer parent, coach, trainer, or cheer team member, preparation is key. Competitive cheer is a high-impact and high-commitment sport. How well prepared the coaches and the teams are directly related to performance readiness and should not be taken lightly.  Most teams begin their season planning 3–5 months before their first performance, especially when ordering customized uniforms and team gear that require production time.

Cheer Season Prep Checklist:

Uniform Ordering (3–5 Months Before First Performance)

  • Select or design competition uniforms early
  • Collect athlete measurements and confirm sizing
  • Allow time for customization, embroidery, and production
  • Plan delivery to arrive well before the first competition or showcase

Warm-Ups for Travel and Award Ceremonies

  • Order team warm-up jackets and pants for competitions
  • Choose coordinated styles for travel and team appearances
  • Consider personalization, such as team names or athlete initials

Practice Wear and Sports Bras

  • Order coordinated practice outfits for training and team events
  • Include performance sports bras and supportive training gear
  • Plan multiple sets for regular practices and camps

Cheer Shoes

  • Choose shoes designed specifically for cheerleading stunts and tumbling
  • Confirm sizing early to avoid last-minute replacements
  • Consider ordering backup pairs for the competition season

Team Backpacks and Duffels

  • Provide athletes with team bags for uniforms and equipment
  • Look for options with compartments for shoes, bows, and accessories

Hair Bows and Accessories

  • Select competition bows that match team uniforms
  • Order extra accessories for replacements during the season
  • Include hair supplies needed for consistent competition styling

Budget Planning and Timelines

Planning apparel and gear early helps teams manage their overall season budget. Coaches should outline expected costs for uniforms, practice wear, travel gear, and accessories before placing orders. Gathering athlete sizes early and confirming quantities prevents delays, especially when custom products require additional production time.

Sponsorship Timelines

Many teams seek local sponsors to help offset the cost of uniforms, competition fees, and travel. Coaches should begin outreach to potential sponsors several months before the season starts, giving businesses enough time to review sponsorship requests and budget for community support. Early sponsorship planning also allows teams to include sponsor logos on banners, team gear, or promotional materials before competitions begin.

Fundraising Windows

Fundraising should be scheduled strategically throughout the preseason and early competition months. Hosting fundraising events 3–6 months before the first competition gives teams time to raise funds for uniforms, travel, and registration fees. Popular fundraising options include community events, product sales, sponsorship drives, and online campaigns. Setting clear fundraising windows ensures families understand deadlines and helps the team reach financial goals before major competitions.

Why Understanding the Cheer Calendar Matters for Coaches

Cheer season can vary depending on the type of team, but most programs follow a similar rhythm that includes preseason preparation, competitions, and postseason events. School teams typically compete during the fall and winter months, while all-star cheer often runs from late fall through spring with major championships toward the end of the season. Because schedules, uniforms, and competition registrations are planned months in advance, understanding when cheer season starts helps teams prepare earlier and stay organized. With the right planning, athletes and coaches can focus on training, teamwork, and performing their best throughout the entire cheer season.
